ruby's first nursery

Saturday, January 09, 2016

When Ruby was 3 weeks old we moved to Illinois (near St. Louis). This is her first nursery and she's already on her second! Although, she hardly used this space, maybe a diaper change here or there. This space was mainly for me.

We knew we would be moving in June and Ruby wasn't due until the middle of May. So at first we weren't going to put up the crib or anything for the nursery. That thought didn't last long and I excitedly got Jordan's help to put together the crib. I was actually disappointed when the crib went together smoothly, so not like the movies.

We slowly began to add all of the items our dear friends and family gifted to our little baby. As this space started to come together I would spend evenings sitting in the rocker daydreaming. This space soon became my favorite spot in the house.

It helped for me to put it all together in our current home, to have some kind of nest and stability in this time of uncertainty. I really wanted to focus on our time here, in this home that I so loved. Even if it would only be for a few weeks, it was Ruby's first home. our first home as a family.

I decided not to hang up any art and to not go overboard in decorating. I thought that this space was nowhere near complete when we left. Now I feel all kinds of heart pains looking back at these photos, because it's perfect. The simplicity, the streams of light, the bookshelf that's not perfectly styled. & even the dust on the floor. I am so sad that Ruby will never know this space, this place and city we called home.

Although I would have preferred not to make a big move to another state with a newborn, I think it really helped in designing Ruby's nursery. I didn't add anything extra and got rid of things we didn't need or want. It helped to get rid of a lot of the bulk that comes with having your first baby. I didn't feel as bad returning or donating items we didn't need or changed our mind on. What's left is everything we really loved. I decorated mainly with toys and books that I found to be beautiful and focused on quality over quantity.

I didn't have a real theme when planning this nursery. I picked out things that went with my own aesthetic, but chose some sweet blush tones for our little girl. Since I knew a lot of the details would be so colorful I kept all of the big things light and neutral.

I am so glad that I remembered and managed to take these photos. I had a lot of fun looking through these photos, so many memories! I hope you enjoyed them too! I will take some photos of Ruby's current room to show you in the future, it's mostly the same but with some art on the walls. She also lucked out with a bigger room!

  4. beautiful nursery! Just curious because I'm considering getting this same rocker - has it worn well, and are the arms a good height for breastfeeding?
